My husband is re-enlisting in the Army, and I wondered if our ferret is welcome on post. What if we are assigned to California where they are illegal? Will they move him with us if we are assigned overseas or to Alaska or Hawaii? Note that we are talking about a domestic ferret here, not a wild one.

depends on the post...here at ft riley its against housing rules to have a ferret along with skunks, farm critters, and some other critters in your housing unit. what you can do is when you find out what post you're going to next contact their vet services or the housing unit and ask them.

as for going overseas, in germany there is no quarantine rules for ferret except that they must have all their shots 30 days before leaving..

if you go to england they have a 6 mos quarantine rule...

good luck

some military bases have a ban on "exotics" and ferret is listed in that category.....if you go to california you definitely wont be allowed to take him they wont override a state law. also if you go overseas ANY pet you take you pay for out of pocket to transport and for quarantine. so alot on that will depend on the airline the military flies you on and the time of year you travel. (some airlines dont allow pets during summer months on international flights)

Ferrets are considered a farm animal and most post don't allow them. And as for overseas, I don't think so at all. When my brother went overseas, it was a hassle just for him to bring his dog.

If you live in family base housing, probably not a problem. Keeping pets in the barracks, a major no-no. Overseas, better find it a new home. Hawaii, too.

Only if they are Fighting Ferrets. Remember the song:

Fighting ferrets from the sky
Fearless ferrets who jump and die
Ferrets who mean just what they say
The brave ferrets of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest
These are ferrets, America's best
One hundred ferrets will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand-to-hand
Ferrets who fight by night and day
Courage peak from the Green Berets

Silver wings upon their chest
These are ferrets, America's best
One hundred ferrets will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request

Put silver wings on my ferret's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a ferret they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret.
