These are the programs that you MUST have in your auto-start list:
The real time protection of your anti-virus and anti-spyware
Your firewall
It is unnecessary and resource consuming to have anything else (like Yahoo! Messenger, Real Player etc.) in your auto-start list.

As AVG is not loaded as part of the "start-up" page, removing everything from there will not affect AVG.
About the only way to determine what the different items in the "start up" are is to look at the directory in which they are located. For example, if the file is located in "c:\program files\yahoo messenger", then it is probably loading some part of the Yahoo Instant Messenger program. Good luck finding a listinf online of all the files, There are literally millions of possible files that could be in "start-up".

It depends what hardware is on your system, what you've installed and what version of Windows you're running. You'll need more than AVG in your Startup so you'll have to turn back on quite a few things.
There are some programs in many computers' startup that are resource hogs and can be disabled without a problem including RealPlayer, iTunes and QuickTime.
I use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) to manage what's in my startup as it displays the path of the programs and gives me better clue as to whether they can be disabled.

most of those things are critical for windows and your PC to load. You do need to research each one to figure out if you need it. If you don't understand it, then might be better to take it to someone who knows.
2nd, if your machine is slow, you might have viruses. AVG is not a good anti virus program. It has been rated low compared to other programs. Avast was rated much higher, you might want to give that a try and see if that find viruses (and I bet it will) that AVG misses. www.avast.com
I was very suprised when I loaded up avast and uninstalled avg with the number of virsues AVG was missing, even when AVG was updated daily.

When a dialog box appears type msconfig.
go to start up tab.
select ONLY the programs you need.
(antivirus, antispyware, firewall, error checking-built-in windows program, etc)

click restart or exit without restating depending on your preference.

if you are going to start>run and typing msconfig.
then going to the startup tab you can disable anything there without messing up your system stability.
so go there and uncheck everything but avg.
you can reverse your changes at anytime doing the same in reverse.
