I was always taught to believe that the soul was always conscious.

Unconsciousness is the closest the living can come to death.... when the personality is backed up (but not running) and all that exists is a body in stasis.

"Praying" requires thought of a sort.... which requires a personality to do the thinking.... which isn't running while you're out.

Good question though.

[ Addendum :~ Lots of christians claiming that the soul might pray while the rest of us is asleep. Well I could be wrong here, but don't they also believe that the soul is the part of us that gives us our personality, consciousness and all that? If the soul can pray while we sleep without our knowing.... does that mean we will be left behind when our soul goes to heaven / hell too? Oh noez! Consistancy-error! ]

If you're unconscious, that means your conscious mind is on hiatus.

So how would your conscious mind remember what happened while you're unconscious? Who's to say we don't actually talk to God every night while we sleep? The conscious mind only remember 1 or 2 of the (up to) 7 dreams we have each night, after all.

The human body and conscious brain-mind of the human body is asleep only, not the Personality, not the Spirit and not the soul.

In my experience, when I was very young, remembering back some to ages 3-8 or so, I had very realistic feeling, vivid dreams and sometimes would awaken in sweat. Ages 8-36 my dreams were seldom, in black and white, not in color; and I knew they were not real even when sleeping. Maybe by my super-conscious soul mind ?

After my 1976 sudden full soul identity experience: "Wow, I am just like me !!" 100% in body and 100% out of body and in perfect "stereo-thinking" -- and then the next year being Spirit Born into All Truth (much left out here) -- then I gradually, over the next 10-20 years, was able to Direct my dreams. If a dream fear-trip started to develop, I while asleep could ever more easily change it. In my dreams, I was three-as-one: The controlling Director (Spirit super-consciousness), the Protagonist (potential consciousness? not sure) and the antagonist (sub-sconscious animal automatic brain-stem fears).

Today, I have little use for mere deams; but upon awakening I do recall some bits of spiritual conversations of Spirit Me to me, possibly --I don't follow these reflections; I choose to be God-conscious while fully conscious and reflecting deeply in my Spirit-led Personality-soul-mind, as I am of I AM and I am in I AM ... (and I AM IS I AM here)

I think God would appreciate it more it you were to pray while conscious, and able to say something meaningful to him.

There isn`t a lot any of us can do when unconcious is there, but how can you tell that the soul/spirit is not praying? we are told in scripture that the Holy Spirit prays in us in whispers that we cannot hear with our ears, isn`t it possible that the soul is the active participent in the art of silent prayer.
Prayer is not always audible, as in contemplation.

Maybe you are so unconscious that you don't realize you are able to pray.

I've prayed in my sleep many many times.
When I've had bad dreams in the past I've prayed for help and was awaken right away! Amazing!

the inevitable question.....

if you are unconscious, how do you know what your mind is doing?
