That phrase is not actually in the bible, It is a quote that has been err.. mutated from the story of onan and tamar in genesis 38. Many people have heard and used this phrase over the years believing it to be contained word for word in the bible and no one seems to know what started it. I remember it very similarly worded from when I was young (the things they tell kids eh) but after looking into it I found that the only mention of spilled seed in the bible is that of onan. Sorry to disappoint you.

Genesis 38:8-10 ... but the translation you use doesn't match my bible version.

There is no mention of masturbation in the bible so far as I can figure. The only detrimental objection to masturbation vis vis the bible would be something to do with lust. Arrrrhh Lusting!

EDIT:
The bible gateway web site link given below me provides all the various incantations of Genesis 38:9. Take a look yourself. Your bible at school had to be one of these versions. You will note that word for word, they are not all the same ~ so people are not going out of their way to frustrate you.. it's just the way it is.

Its not in the Bible and even if it were...the answers in the question. However, since I have not discovered the scripture giving permission to be with a "woman" and pull out instead of masturbation...I'd be pretty hard pressed to say that since the bible doesn't speak against masterbation except where lust and sinning against oneself is concerned and that fornication is a sin..I'm fairly certain this verse isn't in scripture. At least not in the KJV. Love in Christ, ~J~

look up the character "Onan"

it seems to be against the "pull-out" method of birth control, but the term "Onanism" is an older term for masturbation.

I think it is pretty obvious, it means it is better to **** a whore than to masturbate.

Btw it is probably in leviticus or deuteronomy those are the ones with the crazy stupid rules.

I would it is either against masturbation or "pulling out" or possibly both.
