Labrador retrievers have been a purebred dog for over 200 years. All breeds were originally bred from different types of dogs to get the dog the people wanted. If you breed a purebred Lab with a different breed you get a mutt or hybrid.

Only purebred dogs are recognized by the AKC. Every breed of dog originally started out as a mutt to gain certain traits Those dogs were bred exclusively to only others with the same traits to create a purebred dog. Never again should the bloodline be introduced to another breed. It takes many years to create a breed. So yes, Labs are purebred.

Labs are a separate breed of retrievers, just like a German Shepherd is a separate breed of shepherds. A retriever is a classification of dogs, and it includes labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, and several others.
