Dial up is always going to be slow. Yours is beyond slow and un-usable at that speed. Try dialing a different number to connect to your ISP. Different numbers are connected to different modems. Sometimes the ISP just has a bad modem.

Open your Internet explorer Go to "tools"..."Manage Add ons" and make sure everything is enabled.

You will notice the "Microsoft Update" link on the lower left hand column...click there to start the updates....you may have to go there more then once to get all the updates...because some updates require you to reboot before proceeding to the next update.

Updating other (After market) drivers. Every device you buy for your computer has support drivers online for you from the manufactures websites. Simply visit their websites and look for product support for whatever device you need. If you can't find the website...sent me the company name and I'll find it for you.

Deleting unwanted programs..go to "start"..."Control panel"..."add and remove programs" When the window loads up you will see a list of all your programs. Simple click once on the software you want to uninstall and click the uninstall button. Don't uninstall anything you are not sure of. From here you can delete all the Norton files as well. This will free up alot of space...but we still have a few things to do to get your full potental speed. We will cover those steps next.

Getting rid of useless files....

A. go to "Start"..."My Computer".....Right-click on "Local disk C:" drive and select "Properties" From here we can actually see the space on your harddrive...run the disk cleanup...it will show you a list of files...those file are always trash...so select "Checkmark" each of the files unless you are certian you don't want to delete a certian file...then just don't "checkmark" that file ....now let the system clean itself.

(This next step takes a long time and you cannot use the computer while running this program...best bet is to run this before going to bed....it will be finished by the morning)

B. In the same window...above the pie-chart of your harddrive. Click on "Tools" "Defragment Now" and select "Defragment"...not Analyze. When this is complete your computer will be running at its maximum speed.

Cheers

I would have your line checked. With a 56K modem you should get at least 33kbps. Normally it is around 40 to 44. Get them to increase the gain.
One other issue is the make of your modem sometimes there is a mismatch between modems some makes don't talk to each other well. I had a problem which was solved by changing the make of my modem.
