We had two 3d/4d's done because you kinda become obsessed lol
The ultrasound done by my Dr. was performed at 17 weeks, where we first were told it was a girl.
Then our first 3d/4d was at 26 weeks, and you could see her clear as day! Her little girl parts were out there for everyone to see lol... our little exhibitionist!
We were told 26-28 weeks is the BEST time to do it because you get more of the baby in the photo and dvd... which was so true!
Our last 3d/4d, done at 32 weeks, we were almost unable to do, because the guy performing it said anything past 32 weeks will make it difficult to get clear shots of baby in one photo......
We have all our ultrasounds posted if you want to get an idea....

oh, our sessions were $89 a piece, which included a 15 min dvd, photo cd, and printed photos.
They usually ask if you have had a diagnostic ultrasound first (one by your doc) before they let you do it (I'm assuming in case there is something wrong with your little one, they dont want you to see them for the first time in one of these very detailed sessions and see something awful or traumatizing.
Anyhoo.... I recommend it at 26 weeks!
Congrats!!!!

ive looked into them a lot (im 28 weeks pregnant) and you can have one for medical or non medical purposes, and for finding out the gender. however they told m that the best results will occur after 30 weeks as the baby is fatter, and this helps picture quality.
Ive known two people to get one that also found out medical issues concerning the baby that weren't picked up at the routine ultrasound.
I had a 3d (different to 4d) ultrasound at 20 weeks, and it was great, and very thorough, much better than the standard ultrasounds when I had my 3 year old! And im planning on another one in about a month, basically because i think it will be a good experience, and it might help my son to understand.
Good luck.

We are in Oz and my bestfriend used the normal referral from her doctor for her 18-20 scan to book an appointment with the place that does the 4D scans. She just rang up and booked it herself and it cost $150 (less medicare rebate) with a copy on DVD.
Your doctor should be able to tell you where you can get a 4D scan done, you may just have to pay a little more. They may be able to give you a referral to the place directly.
Good luck and congratualtions! The 4D scans are unreal and so amazing to watch. Its such a nice momento of your pregnancy. My best friend and I decided that her baby looked like a little egyptian man on the DVD even though she didn't find out the sex (or so she said, lol!) Its all orangey-brown looking but pretty clear.
Best of luck

Yes I did it , they make a cute video and my daughter likes to see it.Yes you can go to a 3d 4d ultra sound center for pure entertainment I did, they do not do anything medical and recomend you are getting prenatal care.So look it up on the internet I am sure you can find a place if there is one in your state or country.I paid a little over 100 $.

You can't have them "just for fun". It's a very expensive medical procedure and appointments are generally reserved for those with medical screening issues. Unless you have a problem, they won't do it until your 20 week scan. Besides, they baby is easier to see and you are likelier to get a better reading on the scan in 4 more weeks.
Relative to the two year old. You can show him the recording, but don't expect him to associate that with a baby. He's just too little to understand yet.

While I know that many get this done "for fun" at malls and such, I had mine done for medical purposes. My daughter was dx'd with a cleft lip/palate at a regular ultrasound done at around 19 weeks, and to confirm it, I had a 3-d ultrasound done.
Keep in mind that insurance doesn't cover these if not medically necessary.
