they look the same, it will plug in the motherboard, but is it going to work?

There's no such thing as "server RAM". It's like saying "Ford tires" or "Chevy Gasoline". It makes no sense. Servers come in all sizes and shapes, and depending on which memory was popular in its time, it will require different types of memories. Servers back then use FPRAM, EDO RAM, and so on. Servers now use SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, or DDR2 SDRAM. Some of the highest end servers CAN use ECC / Parity version of respective memory, but they are NOT required to.

When some resellers say "Server ram" they usually refer to ram that has the ECC and Registered/Buffered traits. That seems to be the major difference.

Probably not. You need to check the numbers on the RAM, not what someone calls it. If it is old server RAM, it will work with ASUS and INTEL.
