It's very expensive and there's really not a lot else we need to do up there unless we plan to set up a base of some sort and that, I believe is under discussion. The American people have not funded NASA at a very high level on those types of missions. They are more interested in the ones that have a more practical return such as satellite launces that can provide cell phone, GPS, internet, etc. services or other more practical things. That's why we have the space shuttle.
Of course it happened. I watched it on tv. The kind of special effects that would have taken didn't exist back then and it wouldn't have occurred to anyone to do it. Also, the technology of the space shuttle and space station wouldn't now be available without those successful lunar missions.

the object of the earlier space race was to reach the moon first. i think focus had switched gears after that acheivement. i think the ussr and the usa began developing shuttles and space stations, but the space race was a chapter in the era known as the cold war and since then, a few of things have happened to deflate it. first, the soviet union dissolved. with no powerful nemesis to compete with, the cold war ended and the air was let out of the space race. secondly, the challener disaster put a halt to the quest for space for a few years. of course, to get to that point, many astronauts and test pilots actually died, but the challenger was the one that made the news and came under heavy scrutiny for the safety of the program. the third important thing would probably be the series of terror attacks that would culminate in 9/11. space is not on the upper half of our list of concerns-homeland security is. neutralising terrorism is. the political and social landscape has changed dramatically since men first walked on the moon.

What if we really made it to the moon in '67? We discovered the presence of alien bases there... hostile alien bases. The space race was on, we couldn't lose face, but we couldn't reveal what we found. We had to stage the '69 landing as a subterfuge to "end" the space race and buy time to figure out what to do about the greater problem.

It was very expensive, the race was won. And it was probably pretty boring. No cheese, nothing but dust.
But the disaster with the Challenger put a real damper on it. Space travel is dangerous and expensive. Waste of money, really.

in the grand scheme of issues, human beings strolling around on one planetary physique is not extra significant than human beings strolling around on the different. this is barely in the constrained view of people who have faith that the organic realm is all that exists that this sounds like a noteworthy Bible adventure. maximum human beings look to agree. with the aid of the time the astronauts had carried out this two times, even the media stopped masking the missions. till something went incorrect... .

Just kidding.
Actually they had a lot of in flight problems and didn't want to chance losing any more men:
The space shuttle was also in the works and they turned most of their resources to the space shuttles.

You've seen the photos, there was bugger all to do up there.
It's a bit like asking why after a first visit no one goes back to Milton Keynes.
