What tools would be required? About how long would it take someone who's swapped a motor before? Are there any step by step guides out there that I'm unaware of? I have a rod knock in my motor and am trying to save myself a grand and pull the motor myself to have it fixed. I've pulled and swapped a motor from a Nissan 240sx before and swapped clutches. What should I expect? Any tips?

It's a 3 grand job overall. I have about 400 in my pocket right now. There is no loosening the wallet haha

Buy a shop manual like Chilton or Haynes at a parts store and read the procedure for R and R'ing the engine or go to Eautorepair.net for online access to a factory service manual---small fee. Best to read up on the procedure first before you decide if you want to tackle it or not. Call some dealers for the labor time in hours that are quoted for doing the job to give you an idea of how long it should take. It's a tricky engine to pull since it sits back under the cowl. Buy a computer memory saver device that plugs into the cigarette lighter port to save any memory presets for the computer and radio theft-lock--if equipped with one---while the battery is disconnected...saves a lot of headaches. Not sure how long it's suppose to last though.

The whole job needs a pro--there is more than just the motor--the trans needs to be disconnected--the cooling lines need to be removed---something you can ruin with regular wrenches. The radiator will need to be taken out--all the fuel line are under pressure and they spray gasoline--a fire hazard if you don't know how to properly disconnect them. The motor mounts and the exhaust are extremely difficult to remove with out a torch to heat them up. The computer can be ruined if you short circuit a few sensor wires--and you will short a few. The starter has to be out before anything else---good luck with that part. Saving a grand could cost you 3 grand---loosen up the wallet and have a pro do it start to finsih.

It's a very hard engine to get out. It comes out through the bottom along with the front crossmember, suspension, and trans. No much room either.
