i had my first pelvic exam and pap smear. My mom explained to me and said I wouldhave my feet in little footrests. When i got onto the couch there were metal poles at the end with fabric loops, the nurse took the loops down and put my feet in them while i sat on the couch, which was ok. Hwever when the doctor came in he asked me to lie back and he took hold of my ankles and clipped the loops back up on the poles with my feet still in them!! I was so shocked and embarassed i could not concentrate on anything he was saying. is this normal position?

Yes, it is normal for the foot rest to be on the poles for some doctor's offices. It just depends on how the doctor has their tables set up. Some do it where the knees are the ones resting on a special rest and the feet not in the actual stirrups.

I am so lucky to live in the u.k, i never ever have had my feet put in anything to have a smear and no male doctor ever does mine.im asked to lay down bring my feet up together close to my bum and split my knees. That works perfectly for my nurse who does the smear test.I think the put your legs in something is very very old fashioned as im sure thats how women used to deliver many years ago like in the 60`s.

I have found that it very much depends on the doctor, they all seem to have a preferance of positions they find it easiest to carry out the smear. I don't think there is a normal position, just depends on the doc. If you find a doc who puts you in a position you find comfortable and not embarrasing then stick with them. The exam and smear itself is not pleasant so its a good idea to stick with a doctor you feel comfortable with.
