The biggest problem with the death penalty is that you can't reverse it later. The main reason for public support for ending the death penalty in the 1960s was the hanging of Timothy Evans for a crime later proven to have been committed by Christie.

Hard question! Indeed most of us would like to know that murderers don't just end up in jail for so many years before being released as for child rapists ... Maybe there would be a better way than death penalty for them, mainly castration.
Problem is that and while it might seem totally acceptable to us, we might feel a bit different if it turned out that someone we had put to death turned out to be innocent later on.
So very hard question and i'm sure i won't be the only person feeling when saying that, and if would say no in general, should anyone harm one of my kids badly ... I'd want to see them put to death. How hypocritical is that!

I think it's easier and more moral to say no...But, if you were the mother of a four year old who'd been stabbed, I'm not so sure you'd be saying, no, two wrongs dont make a right...What the hell did a four year old do to justify that sort of barbaric end to his short life? Quite obviously nothing...
I think in cases where there is definative evidence...not circumstancial, it would benefit this country to iradicate some of its most vile and depraved inhabitants...It makes me sick to think Im going to work every day and a portion of the tax im paying to get up at 5 am and work my butt of, is going towards keeping things like Ian Huntley protected whilst serving his time, went to the meals that murderess Myra Hindley ate for all those years... They do that sort of thing, the families suffer no end of pain and misery and guilt, we pay for the to be kept locked up, why not just give them the Lethal Injection...It might stop some of these perverted people commiting these crimes...And if it doesnt, well, then they can go the same way....
I know there are people who are mentally ill, I've seen it first hand and if someone is genuinely suffering schitzophrenia or such disorder, then no, I dont think its appropraite for them to be given the death penalty..
But Im talking the people of 'sound mind' however loosely that term can be applied to some of them.. who see fit and get some sort of thrill in stabbing, maming, raping... The dregs of the world.

the death penalty IS the only answer to the problems we face.
paedophiles and murderers have nothing to fear but a spell inside with three meals a day and a judicial system that will fight their case for any wrongs committed against them.
The human rights brigade should be forced to acknowledge that when a child is raped or a murder committed, the perpetrators became less than human and therefor have no rights.
hanging or lethal injection or whatever, it makes no difference, as long as these bastards have nothing to fear, they will carry on regardless.
the Death Penalty is a must!!!

I think everywhere should.
People who rape, murder, torture.. They simply don't deserve to live.
Keeping them in prison, but alive, saps millions of dollars tax payer money which should be going toward things like public education, housing, transport etc, not spent to feed the scum the floats to the surface.
Someone said two wrongs don't make a right, but there is nothing wrong with JUSTICE.
Also, what about the good people out there, the innocent ones, they deserve to be permanently protected from those who would be executed.
Of course, the death penalty should never ever ever be handed down lightly, and before decisions like this should be made, the legal system needs fixing, badly.

A lot of the states in the USA still have the death penalty. Yet it's one of the most violent countries on earth. It doesn't work as a deterrent and innocent people might be executed. So the answer is NO.

No. We have moved away from the death penalty. There is no reason to bring it back.
However, no murderer or rapist should ever be freed. They should be locked up, in isolation if necessary, and never ever allowed out again.
I think it is cheaper in the long run, after seeing the repeated appeals on the American Death Row, which go on for years and years.

As long as we are in the EU we will not be able to. We signed away the right to the death penalty. To re-instate the death penalty, Ireland and Britain would have to leave the EU.
I think it may still be on the books for "treason" but I doubt it would ever be used.

It would be a good way of dealing with paedophiles but how do you distinguish it in law. A 16 year old is breaking the law by sleeping with a 15 year old and how many of them are having babies, so essentially the 16 year old could be given the death penalty. If it was to be swayed by public opinion to a case you would then have mob rule. If it was as simple as saying cold blooded murderers and paedophiles will be put to death and there was a way to prove absolute guilt I would say definitely.

It would not make any difference.
Take a look at Saudi Arabia. They have the death penalty for just about anything you like to mention..
Commit the crime there on Tuesday, go to trial on Thursday , be executed after Friday noon time prayers.
Does it stop them?
Hundreds executed so far this year alone!!!
I rest my case.
These sort of people never , ever believe they will be caught...
Edit
Ok point taken, but surely that isa different issue. It relates to the fact that alife sentence no longer means that atall- 10 years at best I would think.
A life sentence with hard labour seems about right to me. life would seem an awfully long journey to them then!
