It is quickly becoming a thing of the past, but at my house you don't get through the front door unless you are polite and courteous

Hi,
I agree. I am always courteous and have brought my kids up to be polite and respectful of other people. It costs nothing to be considerate and it makes such a big difference to others. Is it poor parenting skills that seem to be placing us in a world where there is no respect, consideration or good manners? For instance a young girl, this summer, made it clear she wanted something from my daughter. When my daughter asked ‘what’s the magic word?’ the girl went through everything i.e. ‘give, I want, let me have it’ but there was no ‘please’ or ‘thank you’. We noticed that none of the family used those words. Not even the mother. What has the world come to when children aren’t being taught the simple basics of courtesy?

My Mom was a firm believer in courtesy to other people.
My Dad was all about respect for others, and saying "sir" and "yes" instead of "yeah."
You would have found yourself going without dinner if you weren't polite at our dinner table, and it would have had nothing to do with child abuse.
I was amazed when in Germany that my German family acted like I was an idiot to hold the door for an older woman. He thought I was nuts. I guess that part of the Fatherland didn't make the trip over the ocean, we were more polite and less formal I reckon than our cousins across the ocean.

I believe so.... sad but true. My mom at least instilled in us that we were to be polite to everyone... I still try my hardest, when Im headed down the rudeness path I can hear her whispering to me... BE NICE!

I try to treat others the way I treat myself. Perhaps I'm dorky for being that way, but that's how I turned out and I'll have it no other way.
