I mean, it hurts people. Why? Why? Why? Why practice this ritual? It states here, "Yeah hazing is emotionally loaded; it is a very emotionally loaded word. We still do it, and I hope we always do it."
-Iota Nu Sigma member.

Is it still emotionally loaded when someone dies from hazing???!!! Would that certain frat be accountable to such incident? I mean does it necessarily require to attain endurance and strength from hazing to become a frat member? Not all frat members go into physical combat, right? What's the big deal? Isn't it that Fraternity is all about BROTHERHOOD? What's with hazing? I just HATE the concept.

To all those who practice hazing...pls JUSTIFY your answers.

Rituals which subject a new member of an organization to abuse, humiliation or extreme commitment to the group have been part of organizations for hundreds of years. The risks involved in some fraternity hazing are stupid with respect to the nature of the organization, especially when run by drunken kids. Much hazing is based on simple humiliation such as cross sex dressing, wearing large signs or odd clothing and facing up to harassment by current members. Instead of banning hazing, rules should be in place outlining the limits and fraternities should face penalties for violating them - including no new members for a year or being shut down as well as cash fines. It is part of the shared experience, like being yelled at by the coach or first sergeant.

first off, Iota Nu Sigma? is that real or did you just make that up?
not being mean. its just ive never heard of it and im pretty immersed in greek life, and people love to make things up on the internet for some reason.

being in a fraternity myself i will go ahead and tell you i was "hazed" in the everyday societal paranoid sense of the word.

most people hear "hazing" they think paddling, beatings, weird sex things, etc... however in todays crazy overly sensative world the word takes on a whole new meaning, being "hazed" can be a simple as taking a pledges phone away during a meeting or making them learn the history of the organization (yeah, can be considered hazing for learning excessive things about your organization).

now to answer your question or questions,i will do my best.

yes its of course an emotional thing when someone dies from hazing, its emotional when someone dies period, but honestly speaking dying from hazing is statistically unheard of. based on the amount of pledges that are initiated every year and those that die, there is about a .001% chance of dying by hazing. yes, that "frat" would be held accountable if the death can be directly traced back to the fraternity. but if its something such as over-consumption of alcohol at a party held by the fraternity well...if no one saw anyone forcing alcohol down his throat, its on that pledge.

the hazing concept has been around for thousands of years, new recruits to military's get hazed around the world. i myself have heard absolutely horrendous stories come out of U.S basic training.

pledging is a way to learn servility, most kids come into college thinking that they are the hottest stuff around, and pledging essentially knocks them down a few pegs.

in any real world job you get, you will basically the pledge of that new job until new employees come in, that's just a real world fact.

hazing is a touchy subject, most fraternities do it for the same reasons anybody takes on an internship, to see how bad you want it. some put people through more than others do. and sometimes its taken too far, so is alot of things in life, it sucks but its true. no fraternity wants someone who doesnt truly desire to be a part of the organization that means so much to them.

when you've worked hard for something it makes it that much sweeter when you finally achieve your goal, i.e initiation.

im not saying hazing is right, im not saying hazing is entirely wrong. im saying theres enough grey area for there to be mishaps, but hazing has been around for thousands of years and more than likely you will be the victim of hazing in some form. just dont go and say that only fraternities haze and all fraternities haze, because both are lies.

I don't practice hazing but I think that frats have it to make their org as cool as possible. With hazing, they could tell others that only deserving people could be in it. They could boast that their org is not an easy org to be in.
On the other side, maybe they practice this so that they could have something in common and in turn they feel the brotherhood that they really have.

1st its not about you. Next, hazing means different things to different people. Hazing does not need to be violent or unhealthy. It is about becoming part of a group and going through the same thigs they did in order to not just become a part of the group but also to feel that you are in the group.
