What is the purpose of using Waxing Paper under the Iron when Waxing?

I noticed in Japan, a lot of snowboard shops advocate using waxing paper when waxing your snowboard. They would place a thin sheet of waxing paper under the iron and start waxing the board nose to tail for a few times creating a very thin and smooth layer of wax coating.
Does this actually help when waxing the snowboard as you'll be scraping everything out eventually or does this actually help the base to absorb the wax better?

the wax doesn't get quite as hot and will lay down smoothly. also will make the iron last longer.
