mm= millimeter = 1meter/1000 = 1x10^-3
um= micrometer = 1meter/1000000 = 1x10^-6
nm= nanometer = 1meter/1000000000 = 1x10^-9
there are 1000mm in a meter
there are 1000um in an mm
and there are 1000nm in a um
and there are 1000000nm in an mm

nm means nanometre, and mm is millimetre. The prefix nano means a billionth or 10^-9, milli is a thousandth or 10^-3.
A micrometre (μm) is a millionth.
So there are 1000nm in a μm and a 1000μm in a mm.
Therefore there are 1,000,000nm in a mm.
As you can see, nanometres are quite small. Nano comes from the greek word for dwarf
It is difficult to type a μ (greek letter mu) in Yahoo Answers. But you can do one in MS Word by typing 03BC then pressing Alt and x together or dropdown Insert, Symbol, Basic Greek, find μ and insert. you can then select it, Ctrl C, open Yahoo and Ctrl V.

Nm=Never mind. Text/Instant messaging slang
Mm is the sound mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
can be used as 'yum' minus the yu. Or a sound of thought, though that usually has the h before it. EDIT-as said above, she is right, it can also be a sound of attentiveness or appreciation
Umm is hesitancy or stalling while you figure something to say.
the number of the 'm's depends on how long held.
um, would just be....said.
umm would be held for about a second and on and on.
My opinion =)
cheers.

ok!
a mm is 1x10^-3 that is 1 times 10 to the negative 3rd power
a um is 1x10^-6 that is 1 times 10 to the negative 6th power
a nm is 1x 10^-9 that is 1 times 10 to the negative 9th power.
mm means milli meters (thousandths)
um means micro meters (millionths)
nm means nano meters
to convert from nm (nano meter) to mm you have to go up from -9 to -3 which means you have to move your decimal point 6 places to the left so
1 nm is going to equal to .0000001mm's
To convert from mm's to nm's you are going down from -3 to -9 so you have to move your decimal point to the right six places.
1 mm = 1000000 nm's

Ummmmmmmmmm depends on if its a serious ummm or a funny ummmm. Don't know about nms though. Ummmmmmm is more a thought whereas mmmmmmmm is an appreciative sound.

well there are 2 ums in a mm
but only one nm
so they are not the same.
Well you should have said.
A nanometer is equivalent to one billionth of a metre if that helps.

1 nm = 1 * 10^ -6 mms
***************************
1 um = 1053,333333333333333 .... nms
***************************
1 um = 1053,333333333333333 * 10^-6 mms
It isn´t the same !
or
english system :
1 nm = 1 * 10^ -6 mms
***************************
1 um = 1053.333333333333333 .... nms
***************************
1 um = 1053.333333333333333 * 10^-6 mms
