If everyone around is willing to call Caucasian people "white" then "black" is perfectly fine. An African-American is an American who is also African. Wouldn't it be racist to assume that all black people were also African.

I think it is okay to call them black, or african american.
I am called white by black people, I call black people black, it doesn't bother either of us, or atleast any black people I know. Just don't say the N word, and you'll be fine. :)
The only people who may find "black" offensive are people who are looking to start an argument, because I have plently of african american friends who prefer to be called black VS. african american. :)

why don't you ask him what he prefers
but is it necessary to refer to the color
cant you just call him by his name .
or call him my fellow American

What do people call you
do they say your name or do they call you
my white Italian born American friend ,
or my slightly dark skinned friend

so you see to refer to the color or race ,
THAT is RACIST
even if you are a nice guy

i got lots of black friends ,i haver never called them African ,
after all that is damn obvious

i just call them by their name
or i say a friend is coming round
i don`t say a black friend is coming round

unless the other person is blind and asks me what color the friend is .
as if that would matter to a blind guy

,it seems to matter to you
enough to ask a question about it .

Address him with his name/surname! :D

Tell him/her:

1. Hi Andy (whatever!) I would like to know more about your culture. You see, I am from Italian, so just curious to know about different cultures.

2. You know in Italy, we do things like this...hows it in yours?

3. DON"T USE THE WORD "BLACK"!!! You will be nothing short of a barbarian, if you call them that!

And I am an Indian! :)

Why don't you call your friend mate, or pal, or buddy? A friend is a friend, whether they're black, white, pink, purple or whatever. At the end of the day...we're all human beings.

Uh Gee, Does he have like a name. Try getting to know him before refering to his race. You don't ask your new Italian friends what they'd like to be called do you? Treat your new friend like an equal and your friendship will be better.

Ask him if your that curious. A friend wouldn't mind the question and would be happy to tell you anything about their culture

If you live in the US, then refer to them as African Americans.

I think 'black'...can't say for sure, though. I think 'African-American' is just what white people think is 'politically correct'.
