It will stay on for anywhere from 5 minutes to 15 then go back off. The coolant isnt low because I have checked it and the overflow isnt empty either. I'm a female so I would rather depend on you mechanical men here on Yahoo Answers than go to a random auto shop and be taken for my money...any advice is greatly appreciated!

Likely the Coolant level sensor needs to be replaced...

Probably a bad low coolant sensor or a wire grounding out in the circuit...sensor is usually mounted in the side tank of the radiator....it's a small tubular shaped switch that threads into the side tank and has a couple of wires attached to it....have to remove some coolant first to replace it and then refill the coolant to level.

I am not exactly sure where the coolant sensor is located on 89 vet I will have to check my automotive library to be able to provide you best way to diagnose and simple way to check what can be. Yes a sensor or the wire may be shorting out . But just as well the components that the sensor sends it signal to can be faulty.
