For certain segments of society, they don't bother to get married at all anymore.

I taught a class on Wills & Trusts for budding paralegals and had to explain about "B@stardy Laws" which, in many places, used to disinherit illegitimate children unless the father legally recognized them (hence the origins of paternity suits).

One of the girls flipped out and got very upset when she found out that, technically, the word "b@stard" means one born out-of-wedlock. "You mean my son is a b@stard?" she shrieked. Well, uh, yes.

But, in my opinion, people marry for lust, for approval and for convienience much more often than marrying for "true love."

I think there are many different reasons that people get married. From arranged marriages, convenience, love, pressure that time is running out, people 'settling' for what they have, financial reasons or a combination of 2 or more.

Every situation is different. It is generalistic to say it's for either love or conveniece and with each reason there are many shades of grey. Not everything is straight forward.

well, i think both reasons apply here for getting married. in our country(Bangladesh) i saw most ppl get married for social recurity the one u termed as convenience. most of the man & woman seem to pass their life without knowing what does it mean by true love.

i got married last wednesday & it's for sure that i married for true love. convenience is a by product of true love.

Lovechild makes a valid point about being pushed into it by our elders and friends.
I am of an age where shacking up with someone was frowned on as was sex before marriage.
It was expected that if the latter occurred marriage was the next step and that happened to me with disastrous results.

We too often forget what relationships and marriage are really about, which is procreation and bringing offspring to maturity. It's to be expected, then, that reasons for marriage are likely confused and forgotten in the actual decision process too.

Everyone gets married for their own reasons, whether it be for love or money or for whatever. There is great variability among people, whether they be short or tall, black or white, good or bad, and everything in-between those. Variability covers every possibility,
