The Victoria Cross, - commonly abbreviated as "V.C.", was instituted in JANUARY, 1856. However, Queen Victoria, - who had the original IDEA, for (and, gave her NAME to), the medal, - decided, PERSONALLY, that, it's awarding should be BACKDATED, to include acts of VALOUR, which had taken place in the CRIMEAN War, of 1854! The inscription ON the medal, itself, actually READS:- "FOR VALOUR" The BACK of the medal, contains the NAME, RANK and SERIAL NUMBER of the awardee!
The first awards ceremony, actually, took place on 26 JUNE, 1857! Anyone, awarded the VC, prior to that date, would have BEEN there, - because, to be AWARDED a V.C., the recipient had to SURVIVE the action, and COLLECT the medal HIMSELF! The idea of POSTHUMOUS awards, did not come into being, until the middle of WORLD WAR ONE!
I'm in the PROCESS of compiling a COMPLETE, - alphabetical, (by SURNAME) - list, of ALL of those BRAVE men, who have been HONOURED, with being AWARDED this simple, - yet, MEANINGFUL, - decoration.
I could, - if I had the required DETAILS, - such as an E-mail address, - try to SEND it to you, once it is completed!

Queen Victoria signed a Royal Warrant on 29 Jan, 1856 that officially recognized the Victoria Cross. It was back dated to 1854 to recognized acts of valor during the Crimean War.
The first investiture of the Victoria Cross was 26th June ,1857. 62 Crimean War veterans received the award on this day.
Here's a list of the 62 Crimean War recipients in the order that Queen Victoria pinned the cross's on their chests. The first was Commander Henry Raby, Royal Navy. Charles Lucas was fourth.
Henry Raby was the first man to physically receive the VC from Queen Victoria and he was actually born in Boulogne, France. His family were influential industrialists in South Wales and he attended Sherbourne School in Dorset.

The first Victoria Cross is generally accepted as that awarded to Lt. Charles D. Lucas R.N. 1854
Three men can claim to be the first VC in that elite list of recipients of the world’s highest award for outstanding gallantry. The name of Lieutenant Cecil Buckley RN was the first to be published in the London Gazette of 24 February, 1857 for his part in two exploits in the Sea of Azoff on 28 May, 1855. Due to his superior rank, Commander Henry Raby RN was the first man to physically receive the Cross at the inaugural investiture on 26 June, 1857. This was awarded for his part in bringing in a wounded soldier under fire during the abortive attack on the Redan , 18 June, 1855.
The man who could genuinely be said to be the very first VC, however, was a young Irish midshipman named Charles Lucas, whose gallant act was performed on 20 June 1854, in what was virtually the first action of the war against Russia. He was born into a wealthy landowning family on 19 February 1834 at Drumargole, County Armagh. At the age of fourteen, he joined the Navy in 1848, the year of the Irish Potato Famine. He first served aboard HMS Vanguard, but it was in his second ship, the 40 gun Fox, that he saw his first action in the Second Burmese War of 1852.
