AN American family has applied for political asylum in Finland, immigration officials said yesterday.

The five-member family arrived in the country on Tuesday from Germany.

Local media have speculated that the parents possibly were escaping serving in the US armed forces in Iraq.

This was in my local paper but I've had to take the snippet from the scotsman (which is at the other end of the country) as I couldn't find it.

I've never heard of Americans claiming asylum in a European country before.

How do you think they will stand? Will it be rejected or accepted?

I've never heard of Americans applying for asylum before.

Under European Law asylum is now granted on the basis that you have a real fear for your safety or life based on political or religious tension in your country. If the parents are trying to avoid serving in Iraq then I don't think they will be granted it because the threat does not originate from their country but from another country.

Also because they are already in the armed forces (I'm assuming this because as far as I know they haven't brought conscription back yet) they obviously voluntarily joined and therefore would be deemed to be aware of the possible risk of being sent to an armed conflict in the course of their job. They cannot argue that they want to be in the armed forces but do not want the possibility of getting hurt.

They should have just done what many others have done and gone over the border to Canada and started a new life there.

Well their excuse can't be any more flimsy than anyone from a third world country arriving in the USA or England. The whole asylum thing is a joke anyway.

People from third world countries have been using the excuse to live wherever they want for decades, why can't the yanks?

(and to circumvent all the smart **** answers, if people really just wanted to escape war/torture etc etc, then why do they traipse through god knows how many other countries, go through a few more in Europe (which is as safe as anywhere), then claim asylum in the UK??)

Open your eyes my friend, about 40 Americans have been reported as asking for asylum in Canada so they won't have to serve in the armed forces.
During the draft in the 60's and 70's the figures were in the hundreds. Every country has it's chickens. It's O.K. to ask but, not to give. Better they leave, we won't miss them.

Why would they want to? I mean no one is saying the USA is perfect but it isn't that bad.... Come on... I hope their application is denied and they are sent back to the USA. No one should be able to move from a 1st world country such as USa, Australia, NZ, England etc etc and claim asylum in another 1st world country it just doesn't make sense. It's Absurd...

i do sincerely hope they are granted asylum.

if it is denied and they are sent back they will be persecuted to no end. they Will be denied all benefits that Americans enjoy. plus they wil be marked as traitors for the rest of their lives. their life will be a living hell.

they have made a very brave move, i hope Finland is wise enough to say yes and make this an example to all future Americans, letting then know even they can escape the tyranny of the American war machine and His Pharaohonic Majesty His Highness the Murderer G W Bush

I say good, hope they are accepted. With over 300 million people in this country they will not even be noticed that they are gone.
