Energy is the capacity to do work. Energy isn't really made up of anything. Just as the definition says, energy is the capacity to do work. Some examples of energy may help clarify this:

Gravitational potential energy is the energy associated with an object that is being pulled by the force of gravity. Think of holding a book with your hand. It has the potential to do work (i.e., it has potential energy) because the earth's gravity is pulling on it. If you drop the book, the book could accomplish work. For instance, it could smash a bug, or if tied to a pulley, could lift something else as it falls.

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. An object that is moving has kinetic energy. A car traveling at 55 mph has a lot of kinetic energy, and if it hits another car, it has done "work".

Thermal energy is the energy of heat. Heat is really kinetic energy at the molecular level. Heat is due to the vibration of atoms and molecules.

Make sense?

Several different forms of energy, such as kinetic, potential, thermal, electromagnetic, chemical, nuclear, and mass have been defined to explain all known natural phenomena.
It can be converted bur can not be destroyed...

To perform 'Work' in the scientific sense, energy must be supplied and expended (used).
Anything which is able to do work is said to have energy.

Definition:
"Energy is defined as: - 'The Capacity for Doing Work"

Work and Energy are thus inter-changeable - to do work, energy must be supplied.
For this reason work and energy have the same units. i.e. Joules (J) (Using S.I. system) and Foot Pounds ( Ft-Lb ) using the Imperial system.

Energy may be transformed from one form to another, but it is never created or destroyed.

Didn't look at anyones answer here..So here goes,
Energy from what I remember is To work and move against resistance..If I remember correctly?..There are two kinds of energy..posistion , (potential) momentum, Yes, you do have Conservation of energy, Which you get into physics...Think I remember this right...I hope!...Yikes! If I didn't!....( I will look at answers when I hit the button to put my answer here!)
Great Question!..Hope no one cheated!

That which when present can be used to perform work, tasks and generally get things done. Without it nothing can be accomplished.

Sorry can't be bothered to prove it!
