What was the worst American car ever built?

Uh, Ellen, a Yugo was make in Yugoslavia. Who'd a thunk it?? I'd go with the Pinto and Vega. Pintos blew up when hit in the rear and when you ran into something, the bolts holding the steering column gouged into your knee cap and crippled you. The Vega had an aluminum engine block that was worn out at 40,000 miles.

From a sales standpoint, the Edsel didn't fair too well. It was a good car but there just wasn't any area in the market that wasn't already filled.

Mustangs rusted out badly any place salt was used. The Willys-Knight built in the '30 used a sleeve-valve engine that sucked oil like it was going out of style. Though not American built, the brainchild DeLorean of American John DeLorean had a lousy engine and transmission that gave out on a regular basis. <'57 Packards had oil pumps that would suck air and scald the bearings and the troublesome UltraMatic transmission kept mechanics busy. '53-'66 Studebakers rusted out badly and '70s Chevy pickup trucks with the 350 engine used exorbitant amounts of gas, 6 mpg on full time 4-wheel drives was all too common. There was oneor two of the first GM 350 diesel that were dependable, all the rest were a piece of junk because of their "flexi-block" underbuilt engine block. A rubber block would have been stiffer. When the timing belt broke on the Ford Fiesta, pistons his valves and you bought a new $600 head. Model T engines vibrated so badly that the front fenders would crack and even fall off if not caught in time. '70s Ford pickups with the automatic tranny would jump into gear by themselves and take out the back of the garage if left running in park.

In short, I think there is no worst American car, but plenty could be considered one of the worst.

The Ford Pinto. Ford made that car in order to make a car able to compete with Japanese cars and it had a safety flaw where if the car got hit the gas tank would blow up.

But then again ford's got some kinda van that goes on fire even when it's off, I think it's the econoline van, now that was the worst van.

Ford taurus, Ford Pinto, V6 ford Mustang in 1990's, Ford Escape, Olds Alero, Pontiac Vibe, Ford F-150 in any V-8. The Pinto takes the cake but the Taurus that did not sell at dealer in 2006, 2007 will not even bring half in 2008 new!

As a mechanic, I would say any which even periodic maintenance such as an oil change is a major challenge. Many front-wheel drives come into mind but I won't single out one make or model.

Chevrolet Citation, those cars were known to self-destruct within a short period of time and they were the most recalled car in automotive history.

that'd be the "Worst Among Equals" wouldn't it ?

- with the exception of the Model T Ford - the last time an American car was near the cutting edge.

US cars are overweight soggily suspended behemoths with the handling of a drunken oil tanker.
