Needed RAM is not based on processor but the operating system. For Win XP, 2x512mb (dual channel) would be optimum and 2x1Gb for Vista. By installing a discrete graphics card, system RAM is NOT shared with graphics. System RAM is 100% available to the programs.

When it comes to memory get as much as you can afford, compatibility is a priority, size, then speed come next. Aim for 1G (more for a high-end system, like video editing, gaming, or 4G's+ for a server), don't worry to much about splurging a little since when/if you replace your processor your memory will still be there.

Memory should be seen independently though. Your programs will run slow if you don't have enough. Faster memory makes a difference, but not if you don't have enough.

I'm sorry to sound like a prick, but that's like saying: I have "X" car, how much (or what grade) gas should it put in the tank.
