its all about profit. they used slaves to work their farms.

like any venture, expeditions from england to american colonies were quite expensive. getting people to go and live in the colonies was itself difficult and cost a lot of money. they must be provided with supplies, and later, their families were brought in to live there.

on top of that, there was competition among the different ' financiers' or ' investors ' who wanted to put up their own ' colony ' sites and so they had to outbid each other to get the best people, those knowledgeable in agriculture and so forth to sign up with them. they also began to offer shares in the produce they got off the land, including, most significantly, the incentive of having the right to own the land itself after so many years.

under such scenario, as the farms got bigger and more lands were tilled, the original settlers could not cope with the work and more hands were needed to work the land. slaves proved to be the cheapest answer for the investors to recover their investment and earn a profit as well. the settlers themselves changed from being tillers of land to owners of land and so, they also wanted the slave workers.

the slave trade itself evolved. while initially only those considered slaves in africa were brought and sold, the demand grew so much that even freemen of africa were kidnapped and sold as slaves.

as europe and america progressed, basic necessities were provided for and people had the time and took a liking to acquiring knowledge in the different fields of study. and one matter that was actually looked into is whether the black slaves were a different human specie, and at least one medical expert supposedly supporting his claim with a well documented medical research. slaves were therefore dehumanized to the fullest extent.

this issue was not confined to the medical community as it had great political significance. many americans began to question the legality and morality of slavery and certainly, the american constitution declared all men free and equal.

When Amerca was frst being colonized most of the colonies were in the north which was not suited to large plantation farms. Because of that there were a lot fewer slaves. As the tobacco farms grew into large plantations more slaves were required to work them.
As the southern part of the country was colonized the land was suited to farming and growing cotton. Because of the market for cotton in the America's and Europe large cotton plantations requiring large numbers of slaves to work them evolved as more and more land was cleaned for planting cotton.
Cotton was the main reason the colonies in the south evolved from being small farms with few slaves to large plantations with numerous slaves.
