the basic configuration of desktop computers has not changed since the first desktop computers were introduced by IBM around twenty years ago or possibly more (not certain of the date). All require the same basic things in order to run.

The Motherboard - The main logic center of the computer that allows the various parts to talk to each other and really make it functional.

The Processor or CPU - This is the brains of the computer.

The memory or RAM- You cannot have a functioning computer with out a place to temporarily store the data being manipulated by the processor.

The Storage - This can be any one of a number of things from Flash memory, to Hard Drives, to CD/DVD or other optical drive technology. This is where the basic operating system of the computer resides when the computer is off.

A Power supply is also needed to supply the electricity that all of the various components need in order to function correctly.

Other parts of computer systems that are not always necessary for the computer to function are Video and Sound cards. Network interface cards, and input cards for getting outside data into the computer.

That being said the average desktop has these things.
Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Video, Audio, storage. Some of these features may be built in or integrated into the motherboard and will bring considerable savings to the builder of the computer system.
