Why not ask the question in the abstract. You don't need to bring a McCann into the question. It reeks of malice.

Probably he would but even if he said that I don't think it would be significant. IF Kate McCann had killed Madeleine in this day and age of all the rocking in the Catholic church (incidentally I am a practising Catholic) do you really think she would confess? The clergy are so strained about a simple thing like sex and they have to give up their vocation, despite what they learned and became priests they are still human and there are not many priests who could live with it if he was told in the confessional the confessor had murdered a little child.

a few months ago..several victims of sexual abuse via the Catholic church were bought off with a very large settlement to make it go away. This happened in my state. Had happened in others as well. So lets not play the Catholic church would do the moral thing and come forward. Because they may not. The Catholic Church has become quite good at covering up crimes. Lets not forget the Pope supposedly invited them to see him. How would this make the church look if it were to be found out that a priest all this time knew something and did not come forward sooner. Not suggesting he knows anything but IF he did I could see reason for him not to come forward.

Yes he would. No matter what anyone tells a priest in the sacrament of confession he is bound to his vows. This has on occasion, in America, led to some tension between the police and the church where the criminal confessed to his priest in confessions. (Obviously he still wanted to get into heaven!!! LOL)

The Church has rules which stop them helping the police to find a missing child? It makes me doubt the whole religion thing if God thinks that a confession is more important than a persons life. I think that if I was the priest I would tell the police and go to hell. If God kept me out of heaven for doing something that may help save a life, prove innocence or find a childs body then I wouldn't want to be there anyway.

Am pretty certain that Priests are not bound by the Seal of Confession when there is a murder investigation on. Have read of cases, where Priests have advised & guided the criminal to the police authorities on learning that the person is guilty of murder.
The Church is always on the side of the law.
I do believe the very fact that the Priest is silent is an admission of the McCanns' innocence in itself.
Edit: Bob J, the Priest hasn't vanished...am sure they will be a perfectly simple reason for him not being around. Perhaps, hes on a retreat?! Perhaps, he couldn't handle the press & was advised to take a break from it all. Naturally, he couldn't tell his parishioners as some busybody would definitely leak this news to the media....
I hear you, with regard to the Church's stand on the sex attacks & would like to make a clarification. The Vatican is governed by rules that are always on the side of the Law.
There are certian nefarious individuals (as in every single institution) who twist & warp the rule to suit their own evil purposes. The Church should not be held responsible for this.

Do you really think she would go and confess to a priest even if she had?
I think her feelings fo guilt relate to leaving her children alone NOT to her killing Maddy.
Sorry but I am still 50/50 about whether or not if any of the McCanns (or their mates) where involved but I think all the passages re guilt and chats with priest would relate to this. And quite rightly so.

Surely there must be some sort of way round this, would the pope really want him to take a confession of that sort to the grave {if there was a confession of course}. As we are talking about a young child here.

As far as i am aware he can break his oath where the law is concerned. I was a medic in the army and was bound by patient confidentiality but if the law was involved for any reason i.e drunk driver, GBH, rape etc i could break the patient confidentiality and report it to the police and give a statement to say what information i had and how i gained it.

He would have to tell all under caution in an ongoing police investigation,,,,,but as we know as the police were going to question Father Jose Pacheco 46, he vanished and hasn`t been seen for 4+ days now,,,his local parishioners are worried about him,,,,,

If he isn't bound by the Seal, why has he vanished?
And why would he go in to hiding if there was nothing to hide?
Faith, the church isn't always on the side of the law. Priest sex attackers being covered up (aside from the odd symbolic martyring of one that's too big to hide) is hardly the stuff of co-operation.
