From experiences, my suggestion is buy a Toshiba.

If you were to buy a Dell; depending on the model it could turn out to be a lemon. I know from experiences that Dell desktops are put together cheaply & there are known problems with them that are continually shipped out with cheaper dodgy parts.

I would use a Dell notebook, if it was free :p

But if I had to buy one, I'd go for Toshiba because at least it's made in Japan & unlike Dell Kuala Lumpar & China.

Definitely not Toshiba, their reliability is laughable, Dell is fine for the price and you can get a Dell with the same kind of specs as an Apple laptop for hundreds less although I must recommend an HP or a Sony instead, both are solid computer brands, Sony being probably the most reliable out of the two but they do cost more than an equivalent Dell or HP will cost but still in most cases less than a Mac with similar specs. The point is at least by purchasing a Windows machine, you will be paying less for it than a Mac with equivalent specs or you can spend as much as you would have on a Mac and get a much more powerful machine from manufacturers like HP, Dell and Sony.

I had a Toshiba laptop for six and a half years before it finally broke (the light behind the LCD went, and it would be expensive to pay a tech to replace it - so I spent the money on a new machine instead.

Dell, on the other hand, I have not personally used, but I have heard others have mixed experience with it - some have had no problems while others had trouble, and found their customer support terrible. I'd suggest checking out a few Consumer Reports type of magazines to get comparisons of the different machines and read the reviews of them to make up your mind.

It's always possible that Dell has gotten better.

I love MacIntosh...but to me, not worth the price for hardware or softwares for that matter.
But by far....For Windows OS, Toshiba is better hardware!!! more durable and dependable. I have had Toshibas' for years since the early nineties and never had problems as serious as Dell can be.

However, You do have to realize what it is that you truly need a computer for help determining which is best to fit your needs...for my needs in Multimedia (on a Windows platform), Toshiba all the way...I love my Toshiba/Qosmio Notebook...though I will admit...it is a little heavier than most other notebooks but the hardware is definitely more durable.

Just like mentioned earlier...it would be wise to go to a website where there is consumer reporting that can be used to help you determine which would be a good buy for your personal needs. Good Luck!!!

They are both good. I owned a Toshiba satellite ...very good but it ran window98 I bought a Dell laptop xp and love it. Dell is supposed to have better Tech. help. If I was going to buy another I would still buy Dell. Toshiba is a very good brand for computers. I guess its a matter of personal preference. Dells tech help was foreign and their sales dropped. They brought back the tech help to the United States and brought their quality back up.

Both companies have had some crap models but on the whole Toshiba are usually thought of as more reliable.

For 3D software you'll need to make sure you get something with a proper graphics chip (i.e. nVidia or aTi).

I should note that both companies are making their laptops in China now, my Tecra M5 has "Made in China" on the bottom of it at least (though it's made well).
