In NFL football, where would the ball be placed if a team attempted and missed a field goal from behind their own goal line (a 115 yard FG)?

If it is placed where the ball was kicked, it should be placed in the end zone. Would this give the other team an automatic touchdown? Or would some other rule prevent this from happening?

By the way, I know this is a silly question!

It is illegal to spot the ball for a fieldgoal in the end zone. If you try it, it is a safety. You can only drop kick in the endzone.
Also, a field goal attept IS NOT exactly like a punt. The defense does NOT have to field the ball even if it is still on the field of play after the kick. They may run it back, but don't have to. If the kicking team touches it or it stops moving, it is placed where the kick was from.

Just in case some team is stupid enough to try this.

If the ball is to be spotted where the ball was kicked, and the spot is inside the end zone, than that would be a safety, giving the defense 2 points and the ball.

Keep in mind that the ball is only spotted where the ball is kicked from if the ball goes out of play. If the ball comes down inside the playing area, it is live, and the defense has to recover it. So if someone is stupid enough to try a 115 yard field goal, it would have to be really wide (as in out of bounds) in order to result in a safety.

It can't happen, before the ball can be kicked, before you have a chance to put your field goal unit on the field you'll already would have given up 2 points from a saftey.(your 5 yards deep in your own endzone)

As long as you agree that this is a darn silly question I will provide an answer...

Essentially, it would be treated like a punt. Even if the ball was horribly wide, it would only get spotted where it went out of bounds, and not back in the end zone for a safety.

Any time a team kicked anything over 52 yards I would put a player in the endzone to catch it. They have a good shot at getting thier hands on it. Dont forget Nathan Vasher did it too, 108 yards, 3 years ago. Go Bears in 08 !!!

I think it would be at their own 1 foot line. But this is one of those things that will never happen. It's like asking "should I buy Preparation H if monkeys fly out of my butt?"
