Most questions about behavior or characteristics of people or animals can be answered with evolution, IE think about what benefit it has, or what kind of loss there would be without it.

Wikipedia didn't tell me (in my 2 second glance) so I'm going to assume the tail stripes are a distraction for predators, as it stands out, and it's better to have something chow down on your tail than your torso.

same reason most have a slight striped pattern on their bodies- camouflage. so they can hide in moonlit trees easier

They don't have stripes, they have rings on their tails.Skunks have stripes.
