What does the "X" next to the Red Sox mean on the yahoo MLB standings page. Also what are the "y"'s next to the other teams?

x means clinched playoff berth
y means clinched division

the x means the red sox clinched a playoff spot the y means the indians and angels clicnhed the division

They have clinched a playoff berth but NOT the Division. They will either be Eastern Division champs or Wild Card, but they cannot be eliminated from the Playoffs. The Yankees are breathing down their necks - threatening to push them into the Wild Card spot. Go Yankees!!! Pax - C

It means that they have clinched a playoff spot with the X, the Y's mean that that team has won their division.
