Can one be a slave if they do not know they are a slave?

God, that is such a good question. Essentially my opinion to the question is "yes," but I think it's a really difficult question to accurately answer and I've pondered it for a while.

However, I most commonly see this questioned raised by someone to justify manipulating or controlling a person/group of people without them realizing it. My own belief is that regardless of the answer to the intially posed question, you are not excused for enslaving someone without their knowledge. Or differently put, I hate this question since I've seen it be used to justify a lot of awful deeds.

yes, but eventually they will wise up. they can have ridiculous tasks pushed upon them, or even worse, they signed up for it themselves. people take demeaning jobs every day and grind it out because they need the money, they aren't brave enough to move on to something else, whatever the reason. in essence, a slave is someone who does hard labor (take the interpretation of "difficult" more than "manual" that phrase connotes) for little reward. in the civil war era, it was lodging and a little food. has much changed? now you fill out paperwork instead and flip burgers over boiling grease instead of having a whip cracked over your back while picking cotton. in the end, this question is really just dependent upon the interpretation of certain things, as is a lot of philosophy. i've worked in retail and in an under-appreciated position, so i'm giving you my opinion. ultimately though, it's your interpretation. we can only give you criteria upon which you may or may not judge this question to be true or false
