I don't know the details, but the major differences in that part of the body relate to childbirth. Yes, there needs to be room for the baby to come out of the mother, but other nearby parts need to be much stronger if you need to carry an extra 30 pounds that far away from your spine.

It has to do with the shape of the pelvic girdle which is wider in women to allow childbirth
