I am thinking of taking home one or two weak electric fish (ie, black ghost or baby whale) after my neurophysiology class finishes experimenting with them. Can they be put in a regular fish tank with normal pet fish (ie, guppies)?

Why? Does any other fish in your tank needs a doll?

Yes. The electrical current is mild, and the other fish won't notice it (and neither will you if you put your hand in the water). These fish use the electrical field to find food and navigate, not to stun their prey or anything of that sort. And you should only keep one "electrical" fish per tank.

You just need to be careful of them if your guppies have fry - these that might eat, although the adults thy would leave alone. To see what other fish they can be kept with, see this link: http://www.elmersaquarium.com/000tropfishcareguides.htm

Yes, they can. They just shouldn't be kept in a tank with other species of fish that have an electric organ.

no they cant.please dont put 4 da safety of the other fish b'coz the little amount of electric shock it makes can kill 5 guppies at a time.

Don't think so.
Better keep it hanging on the electric lines.
So that other fishes will not get electrocuted.

Sure, you can put any kind of fish together. I wouldn't though.
