If you purchase land, shouldn't it be yours to keep? If I don't pay my property taxes, the State will seize my land. Should they have this right?

I don't know if its unconstitutional, but I do believe that one does not own their property and all we are doing is renting it.

The reason

If we don't pay our property taxes, the government takes it away from us along with any improvements done to it.

In essence:
We pay a high amount to occupy the land
Then we pay a high rent to continue occupying it.
From that rent we get some benefits, like reduction in federal taxes (to the tune of 25 cents on the dollar) and improvements in the surrounding area, plus police protection, and schools etc.
We are also legally protected from seizure without compensation as long as we continue paying the tax rent.
Plus we can hand it down to our children, as long as they pay our death tax.

Land ownership in America is no longer the dream it once was. For many, myself included, it was a frigging nightmare.

I now live in China, where property taxes are virtually non existent and at least the Chinese government is honest when they say they own 100% of the land.......the USA, its just a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

Peace

Jim

It's just like taxes on our cars. But, at the same time it's a tax to live in the area. The government provides services that property taxes pay for, like schools. If we did away with property tax, the state tax and counties taxes would skyrocket. Basically since people have called on the government to provide services to the people, the government needs to get the money somewhere. Just how it goes.

Property taxes cannot be imposed without a levy voted in by the local population. The Constitution specifically gives this right to the states.

I hate property taxes too...it is like we are renting our property from the government...our house too!!!
Property taxes make it hard for a person to live off the land because you still need to generate money to pay the taxes.

I think they are. Local governments abuse property taxes, always hiking them up to pay for failing schools. Every property tax increase I've ever had was to pay for the schools. What a joke. Stupid soccer moms and dads fall for the "It's for the children" line everytime we vote on an increase.

Every government collects taxes and can decide how. In England, they once taxed windows. There's nothing unconstitutional about taxing any form of property, since the property you own is usually an indication of your wealth. It is unusual to tax real estate the way it's done in the U.S., especially to support education, and nobody likes that tax. But what about the per capita tax, where you pay simply for existing?

I believe that property tax is the biggest rip off there is.

That and eminent domain are examples of the kinds of things that remind one of the many limits put on true freedom.

Do you know that the air belongs to the government too? I'm just waiting for the "breathe our polluted air tax".

State or Municipal issues are not controlled by the U.S.Constitution but by your State Constitution. I agree that property taxes are not fair but they probably are constitutional. I believe that there should be a citizen tax to pay for State, County and Municipal services. Figure out how much the budget is for a year, divide that by the number of people living in the state and charge each one that amount.

That would be fair.

No they should not . It is up to them to tax commerce and goods and not income or property but that does not make for great profits .
People would purchase quality Items and not cheap disposable crap . Once the government takes what it wants you are left with nothing to buy anything of value with .
