Okay, I posted a question last... I think Wednesday? about possibly leaking amniotic fluid. I ended up going to labor and delivery, and they tested me and told me that I must've just been leaking urine from where the baby could possibly be putting pressure on my bladder. I left and felt okay with their answer.

Since then, which has been 5 days, 4 nights, I've had THREE dreams about going into labor early. This is my second pregnancy, so it's not like I'm SCARED of labor, so I don't know why I'd be dreaming of it so often.

I had a friend just come over and I told her what was going on and she said that she went to L&D for the same thing when she was pregnant with her daughter. For THREE WEEKS they kept testing her and kept telling her that it was just urine. She said it also felt like her vagina was swollen. (AS DO I, which I told my boyfriend about two days ago)

Needless to say, she ended up giving birth to her daughter 4 weeks early because she was SO low on amniotic fluid

MY QUESTION:
I thought the strip test was accurate? What if they did a swab of INSIDE my vagina? Would that make it more correct? Should I demand an ultrasound? and if they do, will my insurance cover it?

Dear Melissa,
Be a *****. It doesn't hurt me any. Odds are, your opnions or knowledge would be useless to be anyhow. If you have dumbass remarks to make, make them elsewhere.

TYIA. :)

The strips they use are accurate 99% at the very least - if you tested negative you were negative..

her amniotic fluid could have been low because she was ot drinking enough water to replenish the supply for the baby, the placenta may not have been working at 100% efficientcy or maybe there was some other complication - generally in the last few weeks of pregnancy (as early as 32 weeks) some people just have lower amniotic fluid counts.

Because I have gestational diabetes i have had to have AFI (amniotic fluid counts) every week to monitor amniotic levels - but with my last pregnancy I was not a diabetic and by 37 weeks my amniotic fluid was so low they induced me and i was not leaking fluid I even heard hte distinct POP when the midwife broke my water.

You can try demanding an ultrasound but if the doctor writes it was at your request you will be paying 600$ for it..

Have you felt like you have still been leaking fluid since last wednesday..if nor it probably was just a kick to your bladder that made you pee (it happens to the best of us)
relax stressing out will do you and the baby absolutely nothing but cause preterm labor and more complications.

If you do not trust your doctors or the nurses at labor and delivery..who the hell can you trust..this is what they do for a living have a little faith (especially in the nurses - a good nurse can make all the difference in a delivery room - I know - have delivered 4 times so far and 3 were great..number 3 was awful cause the old coon nurse didn't listen to me i went from 1cm to 10 in 2 hours and she told me to go home..good thing i didn't listen to her)

Good luck and try to relax

The strip is accurate. As long as it is pressed into the moisture you noticed it will either change colors if it's amniotic fluid or it won't change colors if it's sweat/urine/mucus. You could ask for an ultrasound but that won't tell you if your membranes are ruptured unless you are seriously low which is unlikely. Also if it's an ultrasound that the doctor feels is unlikely it is more then likely not going to be covered by your insurance.
There are several things that can cause low amniotic fluids besides having a rupture. I wouldn't let your friend's experience influence you to much since everyone and every pregnancy is different. You will feel like your vaginal area is swollen just due to the huge amount of excess fluids that are going through that area to support the pregnancy.
Try to relax and trust your doctors...If nothing else if you go in again to get checked for amniotic fluid ask the nurse if you can have a length of the paper to bring home and check for yourself. Most of the time they're more then willing to help out.

Well, amniotic fluid can get low...even when you are not leaking it. I know for a fact that I was not leaking fluid, but I had to be induced because I had very very low fluid levels.

Your mind now has the idea that you are going to give birth early. That is most likely where your dreams are coming from.

If you were leaking fluid you would always have wet wet underwear. Much more then just damp.

What you can do to make sure your baby is doing well is to always check the kick count. If you have a decreased amount of fetal movement, then your fluid might be low. This is how I knew something was not right with me. What you do is get something sweet to drink or eat. I recommend juice, because it has natural sugars and it is cold. It helps get the baby moving. Lie down on your left side, and wait for the baby to move. If you don't get 3 kicks (or even little wiggles) in an hour, then you chould call your doctor.

Best of luck. Try to keep a positive mind, and know you are doing the best for your little baby.

Edit to add.

ohh yes, the swelling of your vagina is very normal during pregnancy. It is one way your body is getting ready for birth. It is just an increased amount of blood flow to your vagina.

Whether your insurance covers it or not I would demand that the doctors do one. A mom's intuition is better than medical opinion in some cases.
