Empowering women gives us control over our bodies and our health, as well as our lives. We can make decisions that affect our lives and the lives of the people we care about. We can make our own decisions about children and how many we want to have. This is why large families aren't as common as it used to be. My parents came from large families and they basically raised the other younger children as Mom and Dad were busy trying to keep the family under a roof, food on the table, and clothes on their backs.
As the males got older they were just tossed out of the house to fend for themselves, unless they remained useful to the family. The females were expected to get married and start their own families or get jobs.
Today such things as the above aren't common as we women have taken charge of our destinies.

Gender issues and female rights have been identified by the UN as essential in the future efforts to control population and reduce poverty. Its important to remember though, that the issues in question are not the ultra PC nonsense we get in America, but more fundamental issues such as female education and female power within families.
It's a complex issue, and if you want details then I'd suggest reading about the Millenium Development goals. There are also plenty of academic articles on the subject.
However, some reasons it is important include :
1). In many parts of the world (particularly SUb-Saharan Africa, where pop growth and over-pop is most severe), high fertilty is seen as a status symbol for males. A male with no children is deemed a failure as a man. As it is the males who hold the intra-family power in these regions, there is often great pressure on women to bear as many children as she can. GIving women more power within a family can allow her to have a say in family planning and lowering fertilty rates.
2). Female education - an educated women is more likely to understand the benefits of smaller families. She may also be able to get a slightly better paid job, meaning that she needs fewer children to work for the family. She will also be more aware of the benefits and use of contraception.
I had to write a 5000 word essay on this at Uni last year, but I'm ashamed to say I have forgoten most of it now! However, If you get onto JSTOR, there are plenty of articles on te role of women in controlling population. Good luck, sorry I couldnt remember more!

You empower women they will develop better knowledge of birth control but hopefully will have the brains to refuse to put out unless whoever they are sleeping with uses a condom as well. Thus decreasing the number of babies born. Thus controlling world population.

Because over population is often the result of male oppresion in the household and limited education and access to contraception.
If women are educated and empowered about their rights, they may not be pressured have sex or choose not to have unprotected sex and prevent pregnancy.
The men who think they run this planet haven't quite connected all the dots that if they practice a bit of self control the problem won't get worse and worse.

What do you mean by controlling ? If you mean birth rates, well that is obvious, if you mean control, then it is because women are sympathetic of security and give a r*ts *ss of freedom. If you tell the fems you can lower the rape rates by 0.1% by taking away their freedoms for security they are gonna go for it.
Also it is easier to sell concepts for women, package surveillance police state and goverment intrusion into something like VAWA and the wellbeing of children and you are set.

Smile. Because when woman learns her rights, she uses them well. Educated and professionally successful lady would not want to have 10 children running around her home. She has no time to take care of them, and taking care of our children is the most important job in the world to us.

While I detest feminism. I will say that women having access to education and health care not only leads to less children but the ones they have are healthier at birth in general. Now if we could just solve the problem of these educated women from throwing fathers out of the home and doing their best to impoverish him.

Because the more education and independence a woman gets, the less kids she will have. If she has independence then she has the option to get a job or do generally anything she pleases which means less time for kids and more time for herself.
