I am looking for hostels in Madrid, Paris, Rome and Athens that would be suited to a 30+ solo woman traveller who is not interested in the party scene. Close to the main attractions would be great but I am not worried about transit. Looking for budget but clean and safe are a must. Thank you for your help.

Buy a Lonely Planet guidebook that covers the area you want to travel, it has a lot of information on hostels and hotels, and on sights, museums, places to eat and drink and travel in and to the towns. All with prices and quality warnings where needed.
I have used the series the last 15 years and find them trustworthy and useful.

In Paris I have used: http://www.mije.com/index_individuels_uk.asp
Three hostels each a couple of minutes from the river Seine and the Notre Dame, you can easily walk to many of the main sights and museums from there and it is also near a convenient Metro station.
I have not been to the other towns, so I can not give recomendations there.
