it's brand new and im trying to set it up but for some reason it doesnt get a internet connection. but i plug in a different modem and i get a connection

It sounds like one of two things.
1) Have you plugged your Broadband Modem into the WAN (Internet) Port? The other router that works, is it a modem/router combo unit? or are you plugging it into your modem? If you dont have a seperate modem then this will be the reason your new router is not working as it is only a router and not a modem/router combo unit.
2) You have not setup the internet connection in the router. You must follow the install guide for the netgear router. They are not plug and play. They require you to setup the type of internet connection you have and possibly type in your username and password for the ISP.
If you are using DSL you will need to select PPPOE type connection and input your username and password.
If you are using Cable then you will need to select the Dynamic IP selection.
Then save the settings and that should do it.
