RPG stands for Role Playing Game. Exactly what that means is the subject of a great deal of debate sometimes and depends largely on what type of game you are talking about.

The original RPGs were what are now called pen and paper (PnP) RPGs. Also sometimes known as tabletop RPG's and (rarely and usually incorrectly) as board RPG's
These are games such as Dungeons and Dragons in which a group of players assumes the parts of various characters and play out quests or similar stories involving those characters. In most cases, one of the players, the Dungeon Master, Game Master or some similar title, creates the environment and the antagonists (if any) that the characters face. A growing offshoot of these games are Play by Chat and Play by Post games that use the original PnP rules, but take place over the internet.

The Computer or CRPG is a RPG played on a computer. The programmer sets the environment and challenges. Examples include the Final Fantasy games, Oblivion or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This form is sometimes controversial with devotees of the older form. Although the player is identified with a particular character or characters that develop during play, there is very limited interaction and player choice. Some claim that this makes them not truly role playing, but several decades of common use of the term have made that a battle not worth fighting, even if they were correct.

The newest form of RPG is the Massively Multiplayer Online RPG, such as Everquest, WoW etc. Again, purists will argue that little if any true roleplaying is involved, but there is much more opportunity for it than in any CRPG.
