1 CNN and other news sources only cover bad news, so all the average American hears is the bad SHlT.
2 the gov. treated Afro-Americans terribly and maybe because they are still embarrassed by that they have done nothing to try to get rid of that stereotype.
3 For years TV and movies have used this stereotype to portray Afro-Americans, further implanting these untruths into the average Americans heads
4 Many older people grew up in less tolerant times, and can not or will not change. As the old intolerant folks die off, hopefully the younger people will be more ready for total equality.

Of course not every black person is like what is shown on the news. But since blacks are minority in this country, a lot of non-blacks do not get to interact with black people in their daily lives very often. So most of what they know about black people comes from the news. It makes perfect sense. Like in other countries where they get a lot of exposure to American media. They think that all Americans are interested in Britney Spears. That's what they see of us. That's what they have to judge us on. When people don't hardly know any black people but they see black people on the news every night being accused of committing crimes, naturally the impression they can't help but get is that all black people are criminals. It's not about racism, it's about what the people are exposed to.

I don't know why people judge by what they see on tv. i Know not all black people act this way but i live in an area that is mainly black people, and yes most do act this way but i always give them a chance until they prove me wrong and all my life i have known thousands of black people and maybe 3 have not acted as they portrait on tv. Experience answered this question for me.

I think most people realize what you've said, but because of the overabundance and the prevalence of it portrayed in the media, sometimes the negative stereotypes make people think that most black people are ghetto, bad fathers or pregnant with "baby daddies", uneducated, unable to speak standard English, etc. We can thank ethnic television, movies, and music for perpetuating the image and blame ourselves for buying it.

However, there are lots of whites the same way, but it is just that this is a white-dominated society and they control a large majority of what people think. Don't worry, there are whites with plenty of stereotypes, but the majority of white stereotypes are positive so there's nothing to look down on. Same with Asians. Hard to think of negative stereotypes because they are so dedicated to what they do and seem to excel at everything.

When a white person tells me I speak well, I wonder why they don't say the same thing to a 25 yo white female. It's a compliment, but they are REALLY saying that I speak well "compared to many other black people" which is not good.

So, I'm not blaming the man on our problems. I believe there is institutional discrimination and racism, YES. But I also believe much of what Bill Cosby and others have said.

They really already have their minds made up about black ppl, the news only serves to "confirm" the subconscious racism they already had. If they knew any better they'd know that black ppl are also sitting at home in their living rooms shaking their heads every time they see a black person on the news for some crime.

I think that people use some things they see in the news to support prejudices they already have. For example, if there is a story about an armed robbery in the news and the person committing the crime is black, people who are prejudiced against blacks will take note of it. If the person who committed it is white, they will not.

I'm guessing it's because those people are lacking in real life experiences with black people.

It's the same concept with sharks. The movie Jaws came out and all of a sudden, sharks are mindless bloodthirsty killing machines that go out of their way to stalk humans.

All because this is only what people have seen of sharks.

A shark researcher would tell you different. That it's not true because they are educated from actually dealing with sharks.

The people who judge people by what they see on the news are not worth worrying about. And they don't judge just black people. . .

You are right. Perhaps the narrow minded people are the ones who judge. There are good and bad in every nationality. There are plenty of educated black men/women, who are not in to drugs or stealing, there are many while people who steal, do drugs, are in gangs, as there are black. I guess it all comes down to how you are raised and if you have parents to teach you that there are good and bad in very culture then we would not have narrow minded adults. Hope I answerd your Q.

People believe stuff like that cuz the damn media that often falsely portrays things like pit bulls.Too many people believe that pit bulls like most black people are bad, violent, and just wrong(not to associate african americans with dogs,i'm just saying that both are massivly misunderstood and should be portrayed in a diffrent light) when its not the truth.Color or type has nothing to do with agression or negitive behavior and no one should believe it does.Hopefully one day these false stero types wont exisist or efect peoples lifes, its a shame.
