They are miniature cleaners. They pick up the small items of food and other dead bugs. They are a part of breaking stuff down so it can become soil.

I almost forgot..they are also bird food.

I'm not sure all the other answers are good... yes they clean up left over rubble, but personally I hate ants They bite and are very irritating. They are extremely hard to get rid of in your yard!
