Elton never did meet Marilyn.
"Candle In The Wind" was written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin (Elton - music, Bernie - lyrics) it came off of Elton's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (MCA 2-10003) released 5 October 1973. Bernie said he had heard the phrase, and liked it. He started thinking about it and how it seemed to fit Marilyn. That's how it was wriiten. It initially wasn't released as a single in the States, MCA Records, thought "Bennie And The Jets" (MCA 40198) would be a better choice, and they were correct. It went to #1 on the pop and R&B charts.
In June 1987, Elton released "Live In Australia With The Melbourn Symphony Orchestra" (MCA 2-8022), which was the performance from 14 December 1986. His revamped piano & MIDI version from the show was released as a single (MCA 53196) and it peaked at #6 on the charts.
Elton had dedicated it to Ryan White at Farm Aid IV. Ryan died a few hours later.
When Princess Diana died, lots of people and radio stations were dedicating it to her. Elton wanted Bernie to write a new song for her, Bernie missunderstood, and rewrote the lyrics to "Candle In The Wind". Elton performed it at her funeral, then recorded it the next day. "Candle In The Wind 1997" was the B-side to "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" (Rocket 3145681087). It went to #1 and stayed there for 14 weeks, becoming the best selling single in history. All the profits went to Diana's charities.

If i'm not mistaken He wrote Candel In The Wind for Princess Diana..
"Candle in the Wind" is a song with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin. It was originally written and released in 1973, written in honour of Marilyn Monroe. In 1990, it rose to prominence again when John rededicated it to AIDS victim Ryan White, performing it in his honor at Farm Aid 4 and at his funeral. In 1997, Elton John did a remake of it, as a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales. This version of the song was released as a single version, and peaked at number one in almost every country in the world.

Yeah, it was written for Marilyn. Thats why he says something about a Norma Jean. That was Marilyn Monroe's real name.
He just sang that song at a memorial for Princess Diana. I watched it on tv that night.
I dont think he knew Marilyn....but maybe he did.
But, I'm almost for sure he had met Diana.

"Candle in the Wind" was originally written & released in 1973 with music by Elton John & lyrics by Bernie Taupin. The song was a sympathetic portayal of the life of Marilyn Monroe (the song's opening line "Goodbye Norma Jean" refers to Monroe's real name). The single release of the origional song reached #11 on the UK Charts & a live version of the song reached #5 in 1988. It peaked at #1 in several countries including the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, U.K., & Ireland. It also went Diamond in Canada & France, 14x Platinum in Australia, 11x Platinum in the U.S., 9x Platinum in the U.K., Germany, & Switzerland, & 6x Platinum in The Netherlands. Bernie Taupin was inspired to write the song after hearing a phrase "candle in the wind" used in tribute to the late Janis Joplin.
Rolling Stone ranked "Candle in the Wind" #347 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Actually Elton John never writes lyrics, only music. His words are penned by a guy by the name of Bernie Taupin. From Wikipedia:
"Taupin was inspired to write the song after hearing the phrase "candle in the wind" used in tribute to the late Janis Joplin."
No mention of him ever meeting Monroe...

I am sorry for her child growing up without a mother, But the comparison to Marilyn Monroe is ridiculous-Anna was no Marilyn, not even in the same catagory as Marilyn.

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, Elton John wrote the music and sang it. Neither one ever met Marilyn Monroe. The lyrics actually say it's about watching her movies.
It WAS NOT WRITTEN FOR PRINCESS DIANA.
I can't believe the answers that say it is.
He also has a song about Roy Rogers. Do you think he met Roy Rogers?

No. She died before he could have met her.
Elton writes the melody and chord changes.
Bernie Taupin was the lyricist.
Part of Elton's artistic strength is his ability to personalize someone else's lyrics. That is part of the song-writing duo's success.
