My husband and I have been married for over a year and a half. We are a relatively young couple (I'm 22 and he is 25) and we have a beautiful 9 month old baby girl. She was also a planned pregnancy. We plan on trying to have another baby sometime next fall. I went on birthcontrol pills as soon as my daughter was born, but they made me terribly ill every morning, so bad that I stopped taking them. Ever since, we have been using the-not-so reliable pull-out method. I have asked him to buy condoms, but since he is the only one working, we are always strapped for cash, and he says they cost way to much money. Like a baby wouldn't???
Anyway, we had sex 2 nights ago, which was my ovulation time, so I know I am going to worry for the next 2 weeks.
So, how exactly reliable is pulling out percentage wise. No rude comments because I have always been extremely careful, no unplanned pregnancies, not even pregnancy scares.

hi dancer, I have been married for almost 18 yrs. the pull-out method is the one that we use as well, because like you BC makes me sick, or gives me migranes. I have been pregnant twice, once after 5 yrs of marriage, (twin girls) and once about two weeks after a delivered which i lost because my body was too ravaged from just carrying twins, but i cant say for sure if he pulled out the second time.
Alot of people are gonna tell you its not reliable and they are right, but it also depends on alot of factors, how fertile are you, how high is your husbands sperm count. If yur hubby smokes weed regularly, then his fishys are mostly dead.
also bear in mind that stress will make you late, so if yur late dont freak out right away.

The pull out method isnt very safe, although I dont know the exact percentage. My son was conceived that way as a matter of fact, and we were also very careful. You should say no sex if you dont feel like having sex. On the other hand, you should just get some condoms. You can get them for free at Planned Parenthood and at Dept of Human Services offices if money is actually what is preventing you from using them. Also alot of Drs offices and hospitals and other places that provide services for pregnant women will have them available. They are typically kept in the bathroom. Dont be afraid to take the free condoms! They are there for whoever needs them to prevent pregnancy. No one but you will know anyways, unless you outright tell people "I take the free condoms from the DHS office!". You are risking getting pregnant using the pull out method much more than if you used condoms. Also theres other methods of birth control other than pills that you could look into.

First of all, pull out method doesn't work. There is no way for a guy to completely pull out before any semen enters the vagina. Secondly, if you have a normal 28 day cycle, the easiest way to prevent pregnancy is to just not have sex from days 9-17. Most women ovulate on day 14, so having no sex on days 9-17 will pretty much cover all the bases. Of course, this is not 100% effective. Any time you have unprotected sex there is always SOME chance of pregnancy. But if you have a normal cycle, the chance of conception on days other than 9-17 are really small. Good Luck!

WOW!!! Your husband sounds so familiar... the 'pull-out' is no real method. My husband vexes me with that every now and again and I am left with the worry and panic until the red river flows. So, I feel you.

Now, condoms will never break your bank. Clinics have them for free! there are many other options as well. I know it's not easy, but having babies when you have other plans is no joke. My first son was 9mos when I got pregnant with my second son. It caught us off-guard, too. (Just hoping a 'method' would work.)

So, be careful and plan better. Again, $8 for an economy package of CONDOMS shouldn't hurt you all financially. If so, you shouldn't be married OR have brought that first beautiful baby into that kind of 'poverty'.

Go 'old-school' on your husband and let him know if he doesn't come prepared, he won't 'come' at all. Protect yourself, even as a WIFE!

be blessed.

Not very reliable...I would really say you have a half and half chance of getting pregnant esp. since it was your ovulation time. Only thing to do is wait until atleast 5 days before you are suppose to start.
Just asking but have you tried other kinds of birth control? They have the shot, the ring and other methods. Maybe see if the mini pill is ok...it's a lower dosage and may not make you sick.
Good Luck!

From what I was told from my doctor, the pullout method is a horrible method to use. Even before a man ejaculates, he still has semen with sperm in his pre ejaculatory liquid that comes out before hand. I'm pretty sure you could call your local Planned Parenthood, as I do think they give out free condoms. If not, I would just try a different type of birth control pill. There are some pills that I cannot be on either, so I had to experiment and find the right one.

Sorry I have no statistics... but do have another family planning idea for you...

Research different methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP)... Catholic Churches often offer free classes, there are lots of online places to get charts, and instructions on how to use them.

I've used the Creighton Model (not pregnant for over 4 years)... it's only on cervical mucus readings, no temperatures... I have regular appointments w/ my facilitator... but all the info is available online...

Couple to Couple league is also popular, they do a mucus and basal temperature charting combo... works for many as well.

When used correctly, these methods have the same success rates as pills and condoms :)

If you choose condoms as your birth control method then a doctor will happily write up a prescription for you and you can get them for free. I am not sure were you live but in California there are free clinics that take patients without insurance and also give condoms for free. Good luck to you!

Withdrawal is 73-96% effective, so I would NOT rely on it!

What about Fertility Awareness Method (NOT the rhythm method)? I charted my cycles and avoided pregnancy for three years successfully (and then used my charts to achieve pregnancy when we were ready). Check out the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler for more info.
