THERE ARE PLACES IN ARIZONA WHERE THE DESERT MEETS THE PINE TREES ON A MOUNTAIN SLOPE. IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN THAT PLACE WHEN IT BEGINS TO RAIN YOU WILL EXPERIENCE THE MOST HEAVENLY AROMA OF WET PINE NEEDLES AND DESERT MESQUITE AND OTHER PLANTS ALL AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS UNIQUE AND EUPHORIC.

When I close my eyes it takes me back to a location in Alaska, beside a glacier. I could easily hike 10 miles a day without even feeling the physical strain of the hike because of the immense, surrounding beauty. The scent was also unremarkable because of the location, yet when in the midst of firs and spruce trees the smell of fresh pine permeated the air. There was a particular location where I would sit and meditate and pray. There was a tree log that had been long fallen because it had a green carpet of tundra on it, much like nature's own astroturf. It served as my seat. The sunrays shone through the tree tops much like spotlights. Those moments are still precious to me. I shared a closeness with nature and God, while also hearing the calving of huge chunks of ice into the Chugach River. That, in spectacular fashion, has been my favorite location to relax in all my travels.

Wood smoke
Fresh cut grass
The sensation that you can almost smell when it's really cold outside (with lots of snow)
and strangely enough...the smell of animals...like a barn.
