Coragryph, I think you are getting "Rights" and "liberties" mixed up.

truth_seeker,
That's funny because whenever I ask what "civil liberties" have been taken away from them they can't seem to think of any. But if you are a FORMER LIBERAL like myself, you know that what they REALLY mean is that they no longer have the freedom to do illegal things, hence, their "Criminal Liberties" have been infringed upon.

joey's back,
You seem to be hng up on the fact that I refered to left thinking people as as "libs". Get over it. "Lib" and "Con" are not slander words. Just simple titles.
But thanks for not answering my question since it is obviously not a simple yes or no question. If you can't explain why then you don't even know what I am asking.

When we say "Civil liberties", we refer to the freedoms that completely protect the individual from government. Civil liberties set limits for government so that it can not abuse its power and interfere with the lives of its citizens.

Common civil liberties include freedom of association, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech, and additionally, to due process, to a fair trial, to bear arms, and to privacy.
This is why the Constitution of the USA is such an extraordinary document and the USA such an extraordinary country; most countries who have had a chance to do or redo their own constitutions try to copy some of the basic concepts related to civil liberties.

omg are you saying there is only one type of person in a large political party and the republicans get to pick which one it is? wow! you're a moron! you see there are many different types of people on all ends of the political spectrum, see there are the fat *** lazy people who want something for nothing because its easier. then there is the over educated that want to give the lazy people whatever they want because they in fact are lazy as well and didn't want to pay for their education. now i know this will be tough for you, but just try and imagine that they're republicans that aren't all like bush too, amazing... see i'm more of a moderate republican, not an extreme republican. just like pelosi and obama aren't exactly the same. now i know you are most likely some moronic communist that wants everybody to be exactly the same so we can all be lovely robot people but that isn't so. we join political parties because they represent most of what we believe in, just like your dumb *** most likely thinks that all republicans are either bumpkins from the south or super rich corporate fat cats. those seem in direct odds with each other too don't they?

Excuse me gustooch, it has nothing to do with having nothing to hide. Your civil liberties are being taken away along with mine. I for one don't have anything to hide, but also don't want someone listening to my phone conversations or reading my e-mails or opening my mail. Our privacy is gone for Bush's jollies so he can play lord and master and you all follow blindly. Man, wake up!

No -- they mean the liberties inherent in the civilization -- civil liberties.

Or more specifically (in the US), the liberties guaranteed by the Constitution -- only 8 of which (in the 5th, 6th and 8th Amendments) pertain to criminal matters.

Oh for cripes sake, of course not!!!

Does asking a question like this mean you have closed off your mind from ever learning anything from people you disagree with? Does it mean you have never found ANY common, human ground with a (oooo, scary word coming up...oooo, beware...) "lib"?? If so, I feel sorry for you; I learn from everyone, and what else could sentient beings be "for"--if not "learning"????

you mean like due process?

the right to a fair trial, freedom from unwarranted search and seizure, right to an attorney?

You obviously have been listening to Conservatives way too much. Liberals mean what they say. With Conservatives, one never knows what they mean. Do you see the difference yet????

did you have an example that you wanted to share with us that gave your question some credibility???

"if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear." is the dogma that has given fascist regimes power over the people all throughout history.
