I have a 2001 ford focus. a few days ago, my engine service light came on. a week before, I took my car for an oil change. everything seemed to be fine.

i took my car to the mechanic and was told that there was nothing wrong with the engine. he turned off the light but adviced me that if the light turned on again, to have it checked with my dealer.

i'm just wondering what could possibly be wrong. everything is fine. the engine runs the same, fluids have been inspected.

any information is greatly appreciated. thanks!

Your check engine light is a signal that you have a problem with your emission system. You can get the codes read at auto zone or most large auto supplies. If you get the numbers and come back here maybe the problem can be found. Stay away from dealers, they will sell you a lot of things you don't need. Don't change any parts until the problem is diagnosed. There is nothing wrong with your engine, only your emission system. It needs to be fixed before it becomes a problem. If not fixed it could cause stalling or starting problems.

I am not a mechanic however i have learned a few tricks over the years mainly cause i don,t trust mechanics. Apologies to any honest mechanics if there are any. First thing i would check to make sure your gas cap was screwed on tight. as a loose cap can effect some cars vacuum emmissions and cause the check engine light to come on. If it comes on again or does not go off,...take it to your local auto parts store and have them check it and read the codes first cause this is usually a free service there. The dealer is the last place to go unless you are under warranty or just have money to throw away. Hope that helps. Good Luck!

Fords are known for check engine lights popping on. More then likely it is not serious. There are multiple sensors so it could be any. You can check the gas cap if that is loose that will cause it. Other then that I would not worry if the car is running fine.

The person who changed your oil forgot to reconnect the mass air flow sensor wire. It is in the way of the filter. This would cause the light to come on. He put it back in and reset the light.

that light is set to come on at certain times ,to remind you to service the vehicle,it probably wont come back on for a while and they told you right ,but if it does come back on just have it scanned again, and the can read and see if it has any trouble codes on it,all it probably done this time was remind you that it was about time to have the oil changed and have it serviced,it was designed to come on at a certain mileage, you should be alright now with it,remember if it comes back on have the computer scanned, and they can find out if there's a problem with it,good luck on it.

Without the actual code that turned on the light, we can do nothing to figure it out.

Could be it's time to replace the oxygen sensor.
