I have a laptop with XP. I am trying to record sound using either the Microsoft sound recorder or Streaming Audio Studio but no sound is recorded. I can hear the sound coming from my speakers (I have tried using both the internal speakers and an external speaker) but it doesn't record. Is there something different I need to do with a laptop? I've always had desktop PC's and have no idea how to make it record! Thanks to all of you for your help!

Maks was the closest. The "stereo mix" is where the problem was. Evidently the "stereo mix" option by default is disabled and I had to enable it. The problem had NOTHING to do with a microphone... I'm not the dummy.

If you use software to record sound from some webpage(streaming audio) then check recording options in the software that you re using. At the recording options(source of recording) put a check mark at stereo mix.
Open the loud speaker on the corner of your monitor, click options/properties.At the next windows click to the circle recording. At the next window put a check mark on stereomix ,klik ok.On the next window put a check mark under stereo mix, where it says Select.

Open up your Sound Speaker icon down by the clock.
At the top of screen that opens, chose Options/Properties.
Set the black dot into RECORDING and click the OK button at the bottom right hand side of that screen.

The Recording Properties box should open. Make sure Microphone is listed as a control, and that there is a checkmark in the box below it . No other Control but Microphone should be selected there.
