The Russian Civil War: 1917 -1922

The Red Army competed against the various White armies.
The Reds were led by Leon Trotsky, Mikhail Frunze, Mikhail Tukacehvsky, and Semyon Budyonny. The Whites were led by Aleksandr Kolchak, Nikolai Yudenich, Pyotr Wrangel, Anton Denikin, and Lavr Kornilov. The Russians, under the leadership of Lenin, also had to face Allied Intervention - Japan, Greece, United States, Canada, Serbia, Romania, Turkey, U.K., France, and Czechoslovakia.

Neither the Whites nor the Allies could defeat the Red Army, and the result was a victory for Lenin's Bolsheviks, and the Establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

*Thanks for the thumbs down - I only answered the second part of the question (I gave names and posted a link) because I knew others would only answer the first part.

The Russian Revolution was not actually a single event, rather it was a series of events that ended with the formation of the USSR. In March of 1917 the Tsar was overthrown by moderate socialist elements, Leon Trotsky rose to the top of this group. This "Provisional Government" wished to establish a Democratic Republic (think western democracy, especially USA).

When the Provisional Government decided to release Bolshevik elements from the prisons in the hopes that they would join the Provisional Government they made an error as to the actual willingness to compromise on the parts of the Bolshevik elements. Instead of joining the Provisional Government, these elements formed another group (under Lenin) and overthrew the Provisional Government in the October Revolution of 1917.

The moderates did not immediately disappear however, as they were assisted for some time by British and American forces in their fight for freedom; unfortunately, the Bolsheviks won, allowing the creation of the USSR and the eventual deaths of at least 20 million citizens by Stalin (Stalin rose to power after Lenin's reign) as well as the Cold War and the spread of communism across much of the globe.

When the Czar first abdicated and was put under house arrest with his family, a provisional government was formed led by Kerensky. However, the Germans facilitated the return of Lenin to Russia and he assumed control from the more moderate Kerensky.

The ensuing civil war was between the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, and the White Russians, who wanted to return the Czar to power. It was because of their activity that Lenin eventually ordered the deaths of the imperial family.

The Communists, under Lenin, started the revolution. The reds and the whites were the two sides. With the Reds being the Communist (bolshevik) forces and the Whites being the Czarists. They were the two primary combatants. However there were several other minor groups that took advantage of the chaos to start their own wars. Also in the lawlessness of the war many bandits were running free. All in all it was a very nasty time to be in Russia.

Leader - Vladimir Iliytch Lenin (real name Ulyanov). Subsequent Civil War was between Whites (supporters of monarchy, basically anti-communists, also called Mensheviks) and Reds (Communists, also called Bolshevics). It's a very brief answer.
