I am impressed. Only one JK Rowling answer.
I would have to go with William Faulkner. You cannot beat his stream of consciousness writing. He grabs you with the first sentence and draws you into his stories and doesn't let go until he is done. His characters are among the most memorable in all of literature. Benjy in The Sound and the Fury is one of literature's all-time great characters - right up there with Holden Caulfield. Pax - C

I like nonfiction.
My favorites are Thomas Paine and Charles Darwin. They give you everything you could want from a nonfiction author: A sense of who they are, profound sincerity, brilliant analysis, undeniable conclusions.
Read "The origin of Species" and "The Age of Reason".
